Perhaps the cat has gone into a kind of deep state feral incubation, resulting from a crisis of cat confidence.
It began when his attempts to entrap and claw to death a neighbourhood mouse failed, the mouse escaping free of cat death, his little tail wagging and tiny button moist nose twitch signalling his mocking rejection of your cats failed attempt to savage his fur off.
Your cat then decided to carry out some standard cat manouevres, running across roads aimlessly nearish to passing cars, running up fences, looking at passers by with scorn then darting off as if late for a pressing engagement- that sort of bau cat shit.
But try as he might to be the cat he once was, he was just completely incapable of overcoming the total crisis of confidence enveloping his little world , stemming from his failure to murder a passing rodent.
Crestfallen and devoid of his usual cat brio, he has slunk home to you sir, seeking the arm of his master, to remind him of past majesties and all his past peak years of attainment in the field of bird mouse and gerbil mass murder.

Could be a kidney infection. Old cats are prone to those. My mum (Lucifer bless her departed soul) got kidney infections when she was old, and it put her off her food and made her hallucinate. She went a bit mad temporarily. Is your cat wearing a Napoleon hat and planning to invade Russia?
